What is coaching… really?Mar 15, 2021
I’m not sure there is one answer to this question. I think the definition of coaching varies for different people. You only have to think of sporting teams and the role of the coach is unique often to the code of sport, and sometimes within a code it's unique to the team.
So today I’m answering this from my perspective, both as someone who has received great coaching, but also as someone who has impacted lives of other expat mums with coaching.
For me, coaching is about helping other expat mums make progress in their lives, with the outcome being attaining greater fulfilment. This may be from a personal perspective, a family perspective or a ‘career’ perspective. And in this instance I say career loosely, because often as expat mums, career is not in the traditional sense.
So, when people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them “I support expat mums”.
But what I really want to say is “I work through the common issues that expat mums face, and I help them to live a more rewarding life”.
And what I really, really, really want to say is “I change the lives of expat mums, so that they can live their life with purpose, fulfilment and amazing connection with their family”
As you’ve probably already guessed, I love working with my clients! I love asking the questions that cause them to pause and rethink what they’ve always assumed. I love seeing them grow in themselves, become more confident in themselves and at the same time become better parents.
People come to me when they feel exhausted by their lives, frustrated by the same old, and desperate for something more. Together we refocus, get clarity and create paths that they can take. We define clear goals and support that with actionable steps.
Whether it’s supporting spouses who have given up their career to follow their partner overseas and they’re wondering how to ensure this move doesn’t have a negative impact on their kids and their family.
Or supporting spouses who have been expats for a while, perhaps this is their fifth move. They know how to support their family, but they don’t know how to have that little bit extra in their lives that’s theirs alone.
Think of it as HR for expat mums. I am taking my 20+ years of human resources and coaching experience, and I’m providing that support to expat mums - mums who frankly need it the most and are so under-served and under-supported.
So why does coaching work? Because with coaching you get private support. You get to share your deepest thoughts and work on that with someone you trust, who won’t judge you, who can help you see clearly what you need to do next.
Coaching works, because you get accountability. You are held up to the goals and actions that you set for yourself, and I’m not suggesting for one minute that you are perfect and you achieve everything in the exact way you wanted or thought. But you have a roadmap, and with a coach you take that journey. And together you clear the obstacles and setbacks that will undoubtedly arise. And you do so in a way that empowers you to continue, to take the next step, and the next.
Coaching works, because a good coach asks the questions that you hadn’t thought of. Through questions, you are able to challenge your preconceived ideas. Through questions you are able to rethink how you might approach something. Through questions, you challenge, and you create change.
So what does this mean for you?
You want to show up differently, not only for yourself but for your family. You want to be full of self confidence. You want to know how to live your life well. You want fulfilment like you haven’t experienced in years. If you want to create positive personal change in your life, I want to be your coach.
When you start working with me, you will get:

But don’t take my word for it… this is from a client I finished working with in January 2021.
“If you are wanting to achieve a goal but are unsure how to get there Emily has the insight, skills and professionalism to help you. She manages to break down the goal into bite sized chunks from the beginning to the end goal in sight. At all times, Emily is wise, helpful and very easy to talk to. She has the ability to clear away the clutter occupying your mind and make you see things more clearly. I highly recommend Emily, she has a real gift for helping people and always offers advice with compassion and kindness.”
You don’t have to do this alone. You don’t have to try and figure out where to start. You don’t have to waste your time and energy searching for the right answer.
